The "Next Gen GST" reforms represent a major simplification of India's tax structure. The previous four-tier system has been rationalized into a streamlined two-tier system with primary rates of 5% (for essential goods) and 18% (for standard goods). A new, higher 40% slab has been introduced for luxury and "sin" goods.
